New York, NY — Microsoft showcased new emojis for its new “Fluent UI” visual refresh in a tweet on Wednesday. This is the corporation’s most recent redesign to Windows, in line with the original plan to transition its operating systems to using the “Microsoft Fluent Design System” (Acrylic and Mica in the case of Windows 11) for its user interface.
The rollout of these new emojis has already begun, with a select few currently already available on the classroom management software, Flipgrid, with the rest of the set being implemented across Windows gradually throughout 2022.
Microsoft issued a statement following the redesign, stating “We opted for 3D designs over 2D and chose to animate the majority of our emoji.”, before going on to elaborate and saying.
“Emoji are solidifying their role as integrated communication tools in our online spaces, and you’ll be able to use each of these refreshed and new emoji across platforms and devices.”

“Beyond emoji, we’re bringing our Fluent aesthetic to life within Microsoft 365 via more expressive themes, illustrations, backgrounds, and more.” Says Microsoft.
The new changes have been met with backlash, often comparable to the one that Apple experienced during the deployment of iOS 7. The simplification of the Windows logo has particularly been met with both criticism and meme status as it’s in line with the trend of fixing what isn’t broken and turning pre-existing into simple and flat shapes.
MajorSky17, Owner and Host of a YouTube channel devoted to documenting Microsoft Software had this to say in response.
“I think Windows 11 is the most visually consistent and appealing version of Windows since Windows 7. It’s translucency effects – a part of Microsoft’s so-called Fluent design language, first introduced in later releases of Windows 10, and augmented in Windows 11 with a new component, known as Mica – hark back to the days of Windows Vista and Windows 7 with their famous and much loved Aero visual styles…”
“…Another big change in Windows 11 is with emoji, which Microsoft have redesigned from the ground up and I think, personally, they look amazing and again, very fitting with modern design. The current emojis in Windows 10 have not been significantly updated since they were first introduced with Windows 8 back in 2012, as part of Microsoft’s then-current design language, known as Metro, which no longer been relevant since the introduction of Windows 10 in 2015.”
Still, despite the beta nature of this news, the vivid colours and striking details in the new redesign are eye-catching, so… in an age full of dullness and gloom, maybe the world does need a bit more colour.
